SiriNam Khalsa’s book never sits on my book shelf for more than a few days. I work with kids who need to practice a variety of social skills and exhibit low self-esteem. I find these exercises to be non-threatening and a real catalyst for insight and change. I highly recommend this book to all professionals in the helping field, teachers and counselors included. I’m looking forward to Volume II?!

This guide provides a variety of exercises which add “flesh” to any group interaction. I used it daily when I worked as a rehabilitation skills therapist with mentally ill adults. The exercises provided a means to communicate, create trust, and build relationships. The exercises range from simple to elaborate and fit into many situations. This book is a great resource to use with children, adolescents, and in certain contexts with adults. It’s a must-have for any therapist, counselor, teacher, or mentoring adult.

I bought this book for use with adolescent groups. I am a licensed clinical social worker will years of experience running groups with this population. I find that this book encompasses some exercises that I already had from other books. I also found some of the suggested topics to be thin on content. Overall, I think that this book is more appropriate for use by paraprofessional staff, or those with limited experience running groups.

Most of the exercises seem to be designed for adolescent groups. It would have been nice to know that before purchasing. However, many are adaptable to adult groups, and are quite useful.

I really needed a simple format, easy instructions and quick activities. I am afraid this was a bit more than that and too much on writing and time consuming. If you need more in depth and have time, this might help, otherwise you will find yourself passing it up in favor of others.
